Before we get into the details, here's the full roadmap. I share this with every student the day they get their waitlist decision so they know exactly what's coming and when.

Now let's break down each step — and why it matters.

Why Did the College Waitlist You?

When I coach students through this moment, the first thing they want to know is: why? Understanding the reason doesn't change your situation, but it does help you respond strategically.

Colleges build waitlists as an enrollment management tool. They admit a calculated number of students expecting a certain percentage to actually enroll — called the "yield rate." When more students accept than predicted, the class fills up. When fewer accept, the school turns to the waitlist.

Being waitlisted is not the same as being rejected. It typically means:

You were qualified — academically, you cleared the bar. You weren't waitlisted because of weak grades or test scores.
The timing wasn't right — the class filled up in your intended major, geographic region, or demographic before your file came up for a final decision.
They're hedging — some schools use the waitlist strategically to hold onto strong candidates they may need depending on how yield plays out.

The hard truth I share with my students: it's rarely about you as an individual. It's about the shape of the class that year. That's cold comfort, but it's also freeing — because it means there's still a door open.

What Are the Actual Odds?

This is where I ask my students to take a breath and look at the data honestly.

And it gets more nuanced. Even within the same school, the waitlist "hit rate" swings dramatically year to year. A school that took 200 students off the waitlist one year may take zero the next.

What actually moves the needle? When I coach students on this, I point to several factors admissions offices weigh when pulling from the waitlist:

Demonstrated interest — Have you visited? Attended info sessions? Emailed your regional rep? Schools that track demonstrated interest will prioritize students who have shown genuine enthusiasm.
Institutional need — Does your intended major have space? Are you filling a geographic, demographic, or talent gap in the class?
New achievements — A significant award, a strong final semester GPA, or a notable accomplishment after your application was submitted can tip the scale.
Financial profile — At many schools, full-pay students have a statistical advantage when yield is low and budget pressure is high. This isn't fair, but it's real, and my students deserve to know it.
Your LOCI — A well-written letter can genuinely move you up the list. More on that below.

Step 1: Opt In — Or You're Already Out

This is the most overlooked step, and when I coach students through waitlist season, I see it cost people their spot every year.

Being placed on a waitlist does not mean you're automatically on it. Most schools require you to log back into the application portal and actively confirm that you want to remain under consideration. If you don't — usually within a week or two of receiving the notification — the school quietly moves on without you.

Step 2: Know the School's Update Rules Before You Write a Word

Here's something I always stress before my students draft anything: every school has different rules for how — and whether — they want to hear from you. Getting this wrong can hurt more than help.

If the school says "do not send additional materials" — respect it. Do not send a letter, do not email your admissions rep, do not mail anything. Schools that say this mean it, and ignoring the instruction signals poor judgment. Your opt-in confirmation is enough.
If the school directs you to update via the portal — use the portal. Don't route around it with a personal email.
If the school gives a specific deadline — treat it like a hard deadline. Submit before it, not on it.
If no instructions are given — opt in immediately, and aim to send your Letter of Continued Interest by the first week of April. Schools typically begin pulling from waitlists in mid-April, and you want your update on file before decisions are made.

On Timing

Waitlist results can trickle in anywhere from mid-April all the way through late July. Some students get the call days before summer. I always tell my students to stay committed somewhere else before that call comes — more on that below.

Step 3: Write a Strong Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI)

When the school's instructions allow it, a Letter of Continued Interest is the one real move my students have. I coach them to think of it as a focused, professional update — not a second application, not an emotional plea.

A strong LOCI does three things:

Opens with personality — a real moment or personal anecdote that happened after you applied and brought the school back into sharp focus
Delivers something new — a concrete achievement, grade update, or experience that wasn't in your original application
Closes with unambiguous commitment — makes it clear you would enroll if admitted, without leaning on tired phrasing

Keep it to one page. Don't restate your essays. Don't apologize for not being admitted the first round.

What I Coach Students to Avoid

When my students first draft their LOCI, this is almost always how it starts:

Though I'm disappointed not to have received an offer of admission, I remain deeply committed to [University Name] and want to reaffirm that it is my first choice. If offered a place in the Class of [Year], I will enroll.

I understand why they write it this way — it feels safe, professional, and sincere. The problem is that every admissions officer reading waitlist letters has seen this exact paragraph hundreds of times. It signals nothing about who the student actually is. "Deeply committed" and "first choice" are claims without evidence. They land flat because they could have been written by anyone.

There are two things I push every student to fix:

First, ditch the template opener. Instead of announcing your disappointment and commitment in the first two sentences, open with a moment — something that happened after you submitted your application that brought this school back to mind in a specific, genuine way. A late-night research rabbit hole. A news story that connected to why you wanted to study here. A campus visit that sharpened your thinking. Lead with that. The commitment will come through without needing to announce it.

Second, retire "first choice." It's the most overused phrase in every LOCI ever written. Instead, show the reader the decision you've already made — through behavior, through comparison, through a concrete vision of your future there. Here are some ways my students have learned to say it without saying it:

"I've visited four campuses this spring. Every time I leave one of them, I find myself making the same comparison. Nothing has shifted it."
"My deposit is going to one school. I'd like it to be here."
"When I picture myself doing undergraduate research in computational biology, I picture [University Name]'s lab environment specifically. I've tried to picture it elsewhere. It doesn't stick the same way."

Here's what that same letter looks like when a student does the work to make it their own:

Since submitting my application, I've had a few updates I hope are relevant to my file. Notice what changed: the letter no longer announces commitment — it demonstrates it. The opening puts the reader inside a real moment. The closing lands with quiet confidence instead of a declaration. And nowhere does the phrase "first choice" appear, yet there's no ambiguity about where this student stands.

Before You Send

Be specific about the school — name a professor, a lab, a program structure, or a course. "I love your campus" is not a reason.

One or two updates, clearly stated. A laundry list of achievements reads like a resume, not a letter.

Don't manufacture urgency. If this school is genuinely where you want to be, say so in your own voice. If it isn't, reconsider whether the LOCI is worth writing at all.

Step 4: Don't Stop Moving

Here's the mindset shift I work hardest to instill in my students at this stage: you are no longer just an applicant. You are a consumer with options.

While they wait, I encourage my students to visit admitted student days at the schools that did accept them. Talk to current students. Walk the campus without the anxiety of trying to impress anyone. Time and again, I've seen students discover that their "safety" school has exactly the energy, resources, and opportunities they were chasing somewhere else.

The waitlist may come through. It may not. Either way, the job right now is to be genuinely excited about the place you'll say yes to on May 1st — because that deposit is due whether or not the waitlist moves. Waiting to commit while holding out for a long-shot waitlist is a mistake I've seen cost students their backup options.

The waitlist isn't where applications go to die. But when I coach students through it, the ones who come out ahead are the ones who stay informed, follow the rules, and keep moving forward. Do those three things, and you've done everything you can.
